Mudik telah menjadi tradisi menjelang Lebaran. Rasanya Lebaran kurang berkesan kalau tidak pulang kampung. Biasanya perjalanan jauh dan mengunjungi tempat yang asing bisa sangat melelahkan bagi anak-anak.

Agar mudik Anda tidak terganggu hal-hal yang kurang menyenangkan, selain mempersiapkan perbekalan khusus untuk si kecil, perhatikan pula kondisi di tempat tujuan:

Sebelum berangkat, sebaiknya Anda memeriksakan kondisi kesehatan si kecil ke dokter. Mintalah obat dan vitamin yang dibutuhkan si kecil saat bepergian jauh agar ia tidak mudah jatuh sakit. Jangan lupakan peralatan P3K seperti obat luka, salep, atau plester untuk berjaga-jaga apabila si kecil jatuh atau terbentur.
Siapkan perbekalan khusus untuk anak agar ia tidak terlalu rewel di tengah perjalanan. Selain baju, popok, susu, bedak dan lainnya, sertakan pula mainan kesayangannnya.
Jangan lupa bawa air putih. Air putih sangat berguna untuk menghilangkan haus dan dalam keadaan darurat bisa menjadi alat pencuci, misalnya untuk mencuci buah atau botol susu si kecil.
Saat sampai di tujuan, perhatikan makanan bagi si kecil. Makanan yang tidak biasa disantapnya kemungkinan bisa menyebabkan gangguan pencernaan. Kalau perlu siapkan makanan dari rumah yang biasa dikonsumsi.
Awasi si kecil dari makan berlebihan terutama snack yang kurang mengandung gizi yang biasanya tersedia dalam jumlah banyak saat Lebaran.

Indonesia Volcano on Sumatra

For those of you that wants to travel to Sumatra, Indonesia, the following information may be useful for you.

Thousands of Indonesians have spent the night in emergency shelters after fleeing an erupting volcano on the island of Sumatra.

Officials issued a red alert after Mount Sinabung began to spew lava shortly after midnight (1900 GMT).

Smoke and ash reportedly shot 1,500m into the air. Witnesses said they could see the lava from several miles away.

Mount Sinabung, some 60km (40 miles) south-west of Sumatra’s main city Medan, has not erupted for 400 years.

Ash and acrid smoke from the volcano have blanketed villages and crops. Local people arriving at refuge centres were covered in grey ash, many had their faces covered.

At least one person is reported to have died from breathing problems.

The volcano had been pumping out smoke all day Saturday, but alert levels had not been raised, and local media reported that villagers had been taken by surprise.

Surono, head of the nation’s volcano disaster alert centre, told AFP news agency that the alert level had been raised to red because the situation was “clearly dangerous”.

“Initially we thought the ash and smoke were triggered by rain but now we know the driving pressure was from magma,” he said.

He said that as the volcano had not erupted since 1600, scientists knew very little about it.

The Indonesian archipelago lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and has at least 129 active volcanoes.

In this next set of tips, let’s take a look at traveling since I’m sure your summer vacation is just around the corner and for most a planned trip ahead. Traveling is generally a pretty safe adventure for the average adventure seeker. However we are in tough economic times these days and many countries and their ‘bad guys’ are feeling the pinch. So let me share with you some prudent precautions for a safe and happy vacation or business trip.

TRAVELING AWAY FROM HOME

Your guard is most apt to be down when you are away from home, whether on business or a vacation. Either you are preoccupied with important details related to your trip or you are thoroughly wrapped up in enjoying yourself. This is why you should learn as much as possible about where you are going and how you are getting there. Find out as much as you can about the country, the town and area you will be visiting.

Become familiar with any important landmarks, facilities or conveniences, which you might need in an emergency. This holds true even for those areas you think you know well. Do a simple Google map search and have a look at the lay of the land! In a foreign country, be aware that their criminals can spot foreigners by their appearance and behaviour. Try to look like you belong and this comes from that assertive confidence in yourself I harp on about. Dress accordingly and do not act as if you are bewildered and in awe of everything you see.

Find out what type of police system they have in the country and the laws of the land. Many foreign visitors find themselves thinking that the police and justice systems are the same as home. Trust me in most cases this is just not true and I am not talking third world countries here either. It is also very important to find out about the cultural traditions and taboos that are important to the locals.

For example North Americans find European cultural ideas much different than their own. This is true for the Europeans when they visit North America. In Thailand it is still considered a big no-no to touch the top of a person’s head, especially children, and in some parts of Africa crossing a man’s shadow is considered a huge taboo. If you look out of place the criminals will take full advantage every chance they get. If you are an easy target at home you will be even more of a target in a foreign land. I can help you to overcome that with some training. The street-smart skills we have already talked about still apply in these foreign lands.

Never give them a full breakdown of your itinerary; only as much as is needed to get the answers and services you require. Remember safety and security first is still your responsibility so learn to observe what is going on around you. Important; guard your passport in some foreign countries this is more important than your money. For example your passport can fetch a lot of money in the right circles and replacing it can be difficult. In some countries hotels still want to take your passport as a security deposit because it is a Government control measure.

Find out beforehand by asking their local embassy or consulate before you leave. Last but not least get a cell phone. If you’re worried about the charges, in most countries you can buy a prepaid chip and this link is a very smart idea. Ensure you have programmed it for your hotel, business contacts and your embassy on speed dial for emergencies.

So to review here is a check list of to-dos:

Try to find out about the risky areas and stay away from them.
You will probably be carrying more money than you normally would, so take extra care in not exposing it and secure it. Travelers Checks in many countries can be hard to use so disperse your cash in more than one pocket so you do not flash around large amounts.
Keep your credit cards safe. It’s a good idea to separate your credit cards and not have them all in your wallet in case it’s stolen. Ensure you credit card has a chip because older cards are easier for the thief to use ( not to mention many establishments in Europe will not accept the old ’swipe cards’)
You may also have more valuables with you than usual, in your car and in your hotel room. Take extra precautions. Use all the safety measures the hotel has to offer, but first check them out. Leave nothing of value in your car and all non-essential items should be in the trunk, so they’re out of the criminal’s sight.
Having an extra set of ID and some extra money and a credit card hidden on your person is a good idea. If you lose everything, you will not be at a total loss.
It’s a good idea to travel with a portable door lock and a door alarm. Use them along with the hotel door locks; a little extra security is good, you never know who has a key to that room. These types of safety devices are available at many locksmith shops, luggage stores and through the Internet.
When in the room always put on the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign.
Never open the door without first identifying the person. If it’s a hotel staff member, call the front desk to confirm.
If you are having a business meeting, it’s best to meet the client in the hotel lobby first and confirm ID’s. If you are satisfied, you can then proceed to your room.
Women on business trips should never conduct it with male clients in their hotel room. Males should abide by the same rule when it comes to women clients. Most hotels today have some sort of business room you can make use of.
Do not get a street level room or one adjoining a flat neighbouring roof. Generally the 5th floor or higher and in the back is safer.
Never leave any information about yourself in your room. For business travelers, this is very important. Hotel staff has been known to gather intelligence on your business affairs and sell it. This is also a good way to set yourself up for attack and/or abduction if you are high profile enough. Remember – in some foreign countries, being a foreigner is enough; tourists have been killed for just their watch.

Rental Cars

Make sure you are aware of the driving regulations for foreign drivers in that country. Try to have some understanding of the basic rules of the road. In some countries, these rules can be quite liberal and a heart rendering experience for the non-adventurous driver.Never rent a car that has any decals or advertising on it that states it is a rental car. You set yourself up as a target right away. Always camouflage a rental car so it says local driver.
If you are having problems with the car, exchange it ASAP.
If you feel you have been followed in this car at any time exchange it as well.
If you are in a country that only rents cars with drivers, check with the hotel for good companies. This in itself is not bad; a car with an experienced honest driver is a good safety step. They know the area and the driving habits of their own country. Plus, they generally make sure the car is in good working order. If at any time this driver makes you feel unsafe exchange him. Most of these drivers take great pride in their service and if you are there on repeat business they may become a valued contact because they generally know everything about the area.
Always fill your gas tank at the start of each day. Never let the gas gauge go below one-quarter tank full before getting more gas. In some countries you may wish to carry extra gas in the trunk for emergencies.
Make sure you find out the correct procedures and laws for motor vehicle accidents. This includes when you hire a car and driver. You don’t want to find out the hard way that you are responsible as well. Find out if the insurance they try to sell you is good and make sure you fully understand the details of the policy; you don’t need surprises here either.
Remember that in some countries driving in town can be dangerous but in others the nice friendly countryside is even more so. Find out from the locals if it is bandit country.
Make sure all your trips are well planned. Let the hotel know your approximate time of return and the general area you are visiting. Ensure you know what type of emergency services is available to you and how to contact them

Must Have Items When Traveling With a Baby

After several long trips with my son in the first nine months of his life I have learned a lot about what should and should not be brought along. The process of packing what you use at home and the reality of dragging it all around with you are completely different. From car safety to feeding you don’t want to miss a beat. Read on to find out what you don’t want to forget when traveling with baby.

Birth Certificate

The only form of identification most parents have of their little ones is a birth certificate which you need to travel. If you are traveling outside of the country you should make sure you get your baby a passport as they are required for everyone now days. The airlines make you show the birth certificate to prove that the baby is as old as you say they are and so they can have them on record in case of emergency.

Car Seat

The wonderful thing about airplane travel these days is that most airlines check your car seat for free if you have your baby on your lap. Since there is a fee on each checked item it can save you about twenty-five dollars each way. However, if you bought a ticket for your baby then you have to take the car seat on board to safely seat them. No matter what you need the car seat on the other end so it must go.

Stroller

As a huge convenience to you the airlines gate check your stroller when you travel. That means you can push your child from plane to plane and not have to worry about carrying them around the airports. Then you leave it at the cabin door when entering the plane for the airlines to put with the luggage for the duration of the flight. When you arrive at your destination it will be waiting for you when you exit.

Portable Sleeper

There are several different items you can bring for your baby to sleep in when they are very young like a co-sleeper or travel bed. However, when your baby starts to move around and cannot sleep unattended it is important to have a pack and play along so they can sleep safely. This item you will have to check under the plane but it is a must have for rolling around and mobile babies so they don’t hurt themselves.

Self Soothing Items

Some babies use binkies or pacifiers and some use blankets. Whichever work best for your baby make sure you pack it for the trip in your carry-on luggage. Grab a handful of binkies and put them in a clean zip lock bag so when one gets dirty on the flight you can just grab another. There are also paci-wipes for sale at most big stores in case they all make it on the floor or you lose some while traveling.

Baby Carrier

A baby carrier or sling work great for traveling with your baby, especially when you are traveling alone. They help when you need both hands for eating your own meal or going to the bathroom. It is also nice to have the carrier along if baby gets fussy and you need to walk the isles so that you have your hands free in case of some turbulence.

Diapers, Wipes & Toiletries

Make sure to pack enough diapers, wipes and toiletries (diaper cream, baby wash, baby lotion, gas drops, Infant Tylenol) for the day of travel and a couple of days after you arrive. This way you have time to find your brand of diapers, wipes and products at the stores where you are visiting.

However, if you are traveling out of the country then you might want to stock up in your suitcase so you don’t have to worry about finding what you use in the stores.

Clothing

Packing clothes according to the weather report where you are traveling is a good start but make sure you pack long sleeved clothes as well when traveling to a warmer climate. While you may be wearing shorts and a tank top your baby may need a long sleeve top in the shade. On the other hand if you are traveling to a cold climate you probably only need cold weather clothing for your baby.

If you know there will be laundry facilities available then you can bring about half as many outfits. This way you don’t have to worry about running out or packing too many outfits. To be safe plan to use about two outfits per day and a pair of pajamas.

Food & Drink

Whether your baby is drinking formula or breast milk you will want to pack accordingly. For formula feeding pack three or four complete bottles, a bottle brush, formula and buy bottled water once you pass security for the plane ride. Pack enough formula to last the whole trip so you don’t have to worry about finding more.

For breastfeeding mothers you will want to pack your nursing cover, nursing pads and a bottle to put some baby juice or water in for takeoff and landing so their ears pop when pressure builds up. Also the bottle of juice and water is great to help keep baby hydrated in between feedings.

If your baby is also eating purees and baby snacks make sure you pack plenty for the trip. Bring enough jars, bibs and spoons for the day of travel and the first day you arrive in your carry on in case they lose your suitcase. Make sure you put all the baby food in one large zip lock bag so you can pull it out when going through security. Also since you have to pack quite a bit of baby food for the trip the room it takes up in your checked bag will be great for bringing home souvenirs and gifts.

Toys

When babies are small they are easily amused by a cup or ball which you can most likely find on the other end of your flight. Do not take too many toys but a few favorite little ones are just fine. Those links are great because you can hook them onto the car seat or stroller and the baby can play with them and a few rattles, mirrors or teething toys linked onto them while you are out sightseeing or visiting.

Bagi anda yang biasa bepergian naik pesawat dan membeli tiket lewat orang lain, supaya berhati-hati, jangan sampai anda terkena tipu. Penipuan biasa terjadi khususnya penjualan tiket melalui B2C ( pembelian ticket melalui reservasi online di internet ), yang disalahgunakan oleh oknum-oknum yang tidak bertanggung jawab, yaitu membeli ticket dengan menggunakan Credit Card palsu atau Credit Card curian.

Dengan modus operandi penjualan tiket murah, Yang menjadi korban adalah orang-orang yang tergiur oleh iklan di media cetak atau bujuk rayu oknum yang tidak bertanggung jawab dengan dalih menyediakan tiket murah. Oknum penipu biasanya beroperasi dengan menggunakan iklan kolom di media cetak. Oknum penjual tiket tidak pernah bertatap muka dengan calon pembeli, cukup berhubungan melalui telepon.

Setelah tujuan penerbangan dipilih oleh calon penumpang dan harga tiket sudah disepakati, oknum tersebut segera melakukan pembelian tiket melalui B2C ( internet ) dengan menggunakan Credit Card palsu. Setelah transaksi di internet selesai, oknum penjual akan mencetak tiket untuk mendapatkan “code booking “ dari pembelian ticket tersebut.

Oknum tersebut kemudian menghubungi korban, dan korban diharuskan mentransfer sejumlah uang sesuai harga ticket yang disepakati ke sebuah Bank, kemudian korban diberikan “ Code booking “ dan disuruh mengambil ticket dikantor penjualan ticket suatu Airlines.

Kantor penjualan ticket suatu Airline tentu saja akan mencetak ulang ticket berdasarkan “ code booking “ yang diberikan oleh calon penumpang tersebut. Sampai disini korban belum menyadari bahwa telah menjadi korban penipuan. Masalah akan timbul pada waktu calon penumpang tersebut akan terbang, sebab pada waktu check-in namanya tidak tercamtum didaftar nama-nama penumpang. Calon penumpang marah-marah dan belum menyadari kalau sudah menjadi korban tindak penipuan kemudian datang kekantor pusat suatu Airline mengadukan masalah tersebut.

Bagaimana tiket bisa dibatalkan

Pihak bank mendapatkan keluhan dari pemegang kartu kredit yang merasa tidak melakukan transaksi pembelian ticket di internet, sehingga pemegang kartu menolak tagihan yang dibebankan kepadanya, sehingga pihak Bank membatalkan transaksi tersebut.

Pihak bank kemudian menghubungi Airline dan menyatakan bahwa transaksi dibatalkan dan meminta ticket yang telah diterbitkan juga dibatalkan dan uang transaksi dikembalikan ke pemegang Credit Card. Bagian reservasi suatu Airline akan kesulitan menghubungi calon penumpang yang tiketnya dibatalkan tersebut, karena nama serta nomor telpon contact person direservasi adalah nama dan nomor telpon palsu ( fiktif ).

Dengan kronologis tersebut kemudian diterangkan kepada calon penumpang, mengapa ticketnya ditolak pada waktu check-in. Setelah diterangkan panjang lebar baru menyadari, bahwa calon penumpang tersebut telah menjadi korban penipuan.

Dengan adanya contoh kasus di atas, maka dapat menjadi pelajaran bagi kita semua, hati-hati jika membeli tiket, anda bisa membeli tiket di travel, atau kalau anda tidak mau repot, anda bisa mencetak sendiri tiket pesawat anda.

Ellyana Fuad selaku Country Manager Indonesia Visa menjelaskan, dengan menggunakan kartu para pelancong bisa menikmati berbagai kemudahan dalam liburan.

“Kartu menyediakan mata uang tunggal yang diterima secara global, dan pelancong dapat mengakses uang mereka dengan mudah ketika bepergian dan tidak perlu menarik uang tunai dalam jumlah besar sebelum melakukan perjalanan. Dalam waktu 24 jam, ATM tersedia di bandara-bandara dan tujuan wisata utama. Pelancong dapat mengakses uang mereka dengan mudah dan memperoleh mata uang lokal dengan nyaman,” ucapnya.

Apabila terjadi hal yang tidak diharapkan, para pelancong harus menelepon Visa Global Customer Assistance Service (GCAS) untuk membatalkan kartu-kartu dan mengurus pergantiannya dengan cepat. Sebuah kartu pembayaran Visa juga memberikan proteksi bebas tanggung jawab (zero liability) terhadap pembelian-pembelian yang tidak sah (unauthorized) inilah bentuk dari sebuah keuntungan dibanding cek perjalanan atau uang tunai.
